Manual Wheelchairs

Manual wheelchairs are those requiring people to move them, either the user or a carer, and most of these chairs can be easily folded for storage or transportation in a vehicle.

Self-propelled wheelchairs are moved by the occupant, generally by use of the handrims,  the circular tubing attached to the outside of the large rear wheels.

One-arm drive enables a user to guide and move a wheelchair from one side - therefore only needing the use of one hand. The two handrims, one smaller than the other, are found on one side of the chair, left or right, and when these are grasped together, the chair is moved forward or backward in a straight line. When either handrim is moved independently, the chair will turn left or right depending on which singular handrim is turned.

Attendant propelled chairs are designed to be manoeuvred by a carer pushing from behind, and usually the back wheels are smaller and rimless. Many of these chairs now come fitted with brakes on the push handles, allowing greater control by the carer.
